SUMMARY

The Carbon R&D Technician position is responsible for supporting Carbon R&D Engineers in completion of R&D project tasks, with near term focus on processing carbon, ceramic and ceramic matrix composite test materials. Activities include test sample preparation, ceramic powders/chemical mixing/preparation, test specimen machining, loading and unloading furnaces, weighing and measuring test coupons and brake disks, material transportation, performing NDE and mechanical testing, and locating and sorting test materials. Training will be geared for advancement to the next position level (T3).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide support to Carbon R&D Engineers as required to meet R&D program objectives. Activities include:

  • Laboratory-scale material processing and testing

  • Wet grinding, slicing and drill press operations sample machining

  • Load/unload, operate and monitor high temperature furnaces and ovens

  • Weigh and measure brake disks and test coupons.

  • Transport materials throughout the facility

  • Complete non-destructive and mechanical properties testing.

  • Complete basic machining operations on carbon disks and test materials

  • Prepare and apply oxidation inhibitor coatings and complete testing of coated materials

  • Sort and locate test materials

  • Other activities as defined by R&D Project Engineers

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

  • Follows established environmental, health and safety standards and procedures while performing daily duties. Is constantly aware of, and looks for, ways to eliminate safety hazards and improve the overall safety of the workplace. Works in compliance with UTAS Quality and Safety Cardinal Rules.

  • Assists in the development and on-going participation of department safety initiatives.

  • Effectively follows Company Policies, Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.

  • Maintains 5S standards of a clean, organized work area.

  • Utilizes Lean Manufacturing tools such as KAS, 5S, TPM and other continuous process improvement tools in performing work duties.

  • Monitors metrics in the work area. Takes appropriate and timely action when metrics indicate downward trends or fall below acceptable limits.

Qualification:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with setup and operation of surface grinder, drill press and multi-axis CNC machining centers.

  • Ability to use micrometers, calipers, inspection gages, and other measuring equipment.

  • Due to federal regulation or contracting requirements, this position is only available to U.S. persons.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • UTC ACE training and experience desired.

  • Laboratory experience is preferred.

  • Experience working with high temperature furnaces, corrosive chemicals

  • Minimum of two years of industrial service.

  • Positive work attitude and ability to accept and follow instructions.

  • Must be able to frequently lift/carry 1-20 pounds throughout an entire eight-hour shift and up to 35 pounds occasionally.

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to frequently reach for and handle parts.

Education: EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Completed certificate program or equivalent in industrial machining, including CNC operations/programming

  • Completed or ability to obtain Lean Practitioner certification.
