POSITION SUMMARY

The Staff Engineer, Chemical/Materials Engineering position is for an experienced engineer or scientist with an appropriate Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the field Ceramics and/or Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs), preferably in the Aerospace Industry. This individual should be capable of managing large projects, as well as defining, identifying and implementing new technology. This individual is expected to be capable of foreseeing technical problems, proposing solutions and executing recommendations, as well as developing new, patentable technology. This individual is expected to develop and sustain strong working relationships with Management and employees located primarily in Pueblo, CO, but also across the Carbon Associate Manufacturing Facilities (AMFs) in Spokane, WA and Santa Fe Springs, CA, and the Corporate R&D Center in CT, as well as the Wheels & Brakes Design Engineering teams in Troy, OH. This position is expected to impact business level objectives and is located at our Pueblo, Colorado facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Define, develop, and characterize carbon/carbon and ceramic/matrix processing recipes and final composites for high-temperature (> 1000°C) aircraft brake applications.

  • Manage multiple R&D projects and project task activities. Project activities include project plan development, material processing and testing, data collection and analysis, and summarizing information in comprehensive technical reports and presentations.

  • Demonstrates high level of self-initiative and bias for action.

  • Direct/delegate tasks and activities including providing direction to lower-level engineers, technicians and production personnel to achieve project objectives.

  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for entire task/project.

  • Propose/create new procedures as required.

  • Address technical problems with multiple variables and high ambiguity levels. Demonstrates clear, well thought out logic in proposed approach/solution.

  • Execute projects as a team member with limited oversight/supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and exercise creativity to develop and/or implement practical solutions and patentable materials and processes.

  • Ability to evaluate his/her work and exercise objective judgment.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrate leadership in following established environmental, health and safety standards and procedures while performing daily duties. Assists in the development and on-going participation of department safety initiatives.   • Utilizes Lean Manufacturing tools such as KAS, 5S, TPM and other continuous process improvement tools in performing work duties.

  • Monitors metrics in the work area. Takes appropriate and timely action when metrics indicate downward trends or fall below acceptable limits.

Qualification:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five-years+ hands on experience in manufacturing, development and characterization of fiber-reinforced ceramic or ceramic matrix composite materials.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite required.

  • Five plus years engineering experience required in high temperature material characterization and processing including carbon-carbon, ceramic-matrix or metal-matrix composites, with preference given to Ceramic-matrix composites.

  • Working knowledge of high temperature composite material processing equipment and processes including, textiles, composite lay-up, carbonization, CVD and CVI, resin and polymer infiltration, powder processing, melt infiltration and sintering.

  • Due to federal regulation or contracting requirements, this position is only available to U.S. persons.

PREFERRED

  • PhD degree in Engineering with focus on fiber reinforced Ceramics and/or Ceramic Matrix Composites.
