Position Summary

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

This position will require an operator to be proficient in fine grading to a finished surface to be paved upon, that will meet all conditions required in the specifications.

Oversee the operations of a grading crew including safety, quality, scheduling, logistics, equipment selection, personnel management and product placement. This position will require experience in all aspects of the grading crew / asphalt paving industry. The Rocky Mountain Southern Division work area is across the Front Range.


  • 3 years of related experience, preferred

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Good communication skills

  • Team player

  • Flexibility to work overtime, nights and weekends as needed

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening.

  • Ability to diagnose and communicate equipment issues.

  • Fine grade to within+/- ¼” or .02’

  • Capable of reading plans, grade stakes, and set blue tops.

  • Capable of lifting 70 pounds

  • Proficient with the use of hand tools.

  • Ensure that safe practices are utilized at all times by crew members and sub-contractors. Engage Crisis Management process if necessary.

  • Support Martin Marietta Health & Safety standards, processes (including Toolbox meetings), and implementation and enforcement of Martin Marietta Safety and Environmental policies.

  • Ensure highest quality in all aspect of grading operations through implementation of industry best practices.

  • Manage crew costs contributing to meeting or exceeding estimated margins.

  • Identify and communicate potential impacts to quality, cost management and safety on each assigned project through pre pave inspections.

  • Ensure compliance of all policies and programs including reporting, recognition and disciplinary procedures

  • Continuation of open culture that encourages employee ownership of safety and sharing of ideas for improvement.

  • Coaching and training of crew members to ensure company and employee success. Cross train employees to establish well rounded work force.

  • Communicate with crew to ensure daily job duties and plans are carried out.

  • Communicate with logistics on trucking needs or changes.

  • Communicate with material suppliers regarding base types, and/or changes.

  • Act as point of contact for positive interaction with Customers, Project Managers, and Inspectors on job site.

  • Oversee required equipment and trucking operation with regard to safety, quality, and productivity.

  • Responsible for crew equipment inspections, wear parts and housekeeping.

  • Responsible for cleanliness and quality on job site.

  • Ensure crew has proper tools for job.

  • Complete all daily reporting requirements for the crew. This to include complete and accurate reporting using Build2Win software, correct pre and post shift inspection sheets and weekly toolbox safety meetings.
